Foxpalmer – Forever (2021)

While there are many songs out there about the dark times following a breakup, Foxpalmer has captured the dark emotions perfectly in their single ‘Forever’. An all-encompassing single, it works through the initial anger, remnants of love, heartbreak, denial and a touch of madness. All these emotions come together and swirl around you for a suspended moment of inability to imagine going on.

With a powerful and evocative sound, Fern McNulty (vocals, guitar), Andy Payne (bass), Mat Dal Pos (guitar) and William Morris (drums) bring the captivating tones of live performances to your ears. The first single off their EP Dark Tides, its sets some very high expectations for what is to come. Using heartfelt lyrics and immersive emotive flows, the band has you sinking into the dark madness of their sound.

‘Forever’ hits the ground running with a flowing melody that grips your hand and pulls. There is a sense of darkness in the melody that lets you know this is not a happy single. The driving guitar line and drums have you running into the single while there is this electric guitar in the background that niggles in the back of your mind. Every instrument comes together for a perfectly blended soundscape that wraps around you and holds you in place while the vocals wash over you.

While the melody has you rooted to the spot, McNulty’s vocals are an infusion of pain, heartbreak and the edge of madness. Each word has been soaked in the dark emotions most have felt post-breakup. The soaring moments of her vocals bring an interesting mixture of despair and standing on the precipice of madness. As you listen to the lyrics, you are filled with all the things you wish you could say after a breakup. There is a wonderful catharsis to be had through the single.

The accompanying music video uses its visuals to great effect as you get the hit of heartbreak and despair while dancing along the edge of madness. The video shows McNulty in a candle-lit room singing while looking like she has been crying. This visual is broken with her standing on the beach looking out at the water on a cold day. Every visual comes together to enhance the emotive power of the single while making the video really great to watch.

Foxpalmer work through the dark emotions that overtake you post-breakup while flirting with the edges of madness in ‘Forever’.
