Foundry Town Survivors – Hey! (2023)
Lifelong friendships can run very deep with strong emotional connections. They support you through the tough times. They laugh with you during happier times. Most importantly, they have your back when push comes to shove. For US-based duo Foundry Town Survivors, the lads had a very deep connection from the moment they met. In an interview with Vents Magazine, Mark Tomorsky and Tommy Johnsmiller share “…little did we know, back when we first started playing together right after high school, that was the groundwork for FTS. What turned us on as musicians and music fans was very similar…fast-forward and add that auspicious beginning to everything we’ve learned along the way, and you have who we are now, Foundry Town Survivors.”
From their debut single ‘Mississippi Rising’ to ‘Hopes and Dreams’ and ‘American Dream’, FTS meld their combined passion for rock, blues and jazz into a hard-hitting sound to melt eardrums. Bringing something vintage to modern audiences, the pair pay homage to older bands like Van Halen and Deep Purple but place a contemporary twist on the classic sound.
Following the single ‘In My Dreams’, FTS show their versatility and genre diversity by moving from smoother Americana meets blues to gut-wrenching classic rock in ‘Hey!’. Recorded with producer Jeff Peters, ‘Hey!’ combines pounding drums, driving bass and crashing guitars in a swooping swoosh of sonic awesomeness. Gruff and bold, the track seems a tribute to classic rock bands like Van Halen. Yet, at the same time, that contemporary twist I mentioned lurks beneath with a fun, bounciness.
While the melody intoxicates listeners instantaneously with its “what the hell was that” attitude, a smoothness exists in ‘Hey!’. Rich, bold and harmonic, Johnsmiller’s vocals swim through the chaotic tune with exquisite ease. Interestingly, while there is a sophistication to the production, ‘Hey!’ has a rough rawness to the song.
