Forgotten Garden – Memoriam (2022)

Across their EP Broken Pieces and the single ‘Bad Guy’, Forgotten Garden has taken us through bad relationships and the charming exterior of someone who revels in breaking hearts. They are now taking a truly anguished path with ‘Memoriam’ as they consider not being able to comfort a loved one at their time of passing. An experience that many people have faced during the pandemic, the soaring riffs and wistful sounds of the single perfectly capture the emotions felt, while tearing at your heart.

Sad and poignant, this rock single weaves some dark wave touches into the melancholic flows of the guitars. Exploring a tragic aspect of humanity’s existence, it will leave an ache in your chest and the need to connect with your loved ones. Beautifully emotive, this is a single you need to listen to.

‘Memoriam’ draws you into the melancholic tones from the first sweep of the music. The keys that fill the soundscape have an almost foggy feeling like the chill fog that rests over the earth in the early morning. This brings a cold feeling to your skin that slowly sinks into your chest and meets the sadness of the vocals and lyrics. There is a strong bassline to the melody that leads you further into the track while the tumbling roll of the drums run beneath you. The melody is packed with multiple layers that all swirl around the melancholic guitar line. In the high levels of the melody, there are these rather atmospheric synths that bring a wistful sigh to the soundscape later in the track. Through all of this, the music has a feeling of loss and grief woven into it that eats into your spirit and leaves behind a bone-deep sadness that you are sure will never leave.

Inês’ delicate vocals are a shining light against the grief of the melody. While her performance is a beacon that you follow through the fog of melancholy, she brings her own anguished pain to the single. Through the lyrics, the duo consider all the things that are left unsaid and that you will not be able to show to someone who has passed without you there. It is a really touching single that fills a well of emotion in your chest with pain and the ache of loss. The power of her vocals rides the movement of the melody perfectly to infuse the emotions of the track into every note. Tragically beautiful, this is a single that you can easily have on repeat and feel the emotional hit anew each time you listen.

Sad, poignant, anguished and tragically beautiful, ‘Memoriam’ by Forgotten Garden is a stunning encapsulation of grief and the pain of loss that leaves a wonderful ache in your chest. The melody sweeps you into the melancholy of the track with a chill foggy touch. The vocals are a shining beacon that stands out against the darkness, but brings its own hit of pained grief.
