Foreign Saints – Here With Me (2023)

The brainchild of US-based singer-songwriter Thomas Roberts, Foreign Saints is a bedroom-pop musical endeavour to inspire, intrigue and intoxicate. Quick fun fact, because we all like fun facts, the band name Foreign Saints is “a nod to when the artist hiked the Camino de Santiago where the pull of completing a journey named after an arbitrary foreign saint showed him the beauty in the pursuit of something in and of itself”. Come with us as we delve into his debut single ‘Here With Me’.

As a newbie within the sonic sea that is the music industry, you might consider Foreign Saints’s sound to be raw and naïve; however, he is anything but. Filled with whimsy and wistful longing, ‘Here With Me’ has the charm of a youngster paddling about kaleidoscopic pools of sound. The thing is, just as charming and smile-inducingly innocent as the melody is, there is a sophisticated elegance beneath the synth-driven tune.

Inspired by acts like War On Drugs and The Japanese House, bedroom-pop isn’t exactly what I expected. Instead, Roberts reaches beneath the artists’ sound, grapples about the sonic goo and finds that inspiring whimsy harboured within their concepts. To inspire, intrigue and intoxicate. It doesn’t matter what it presents as, the aim is to inspire listeners and Foreign Saints hits that on the head with his mellifluous ‘Here With Me’.

Created with Harper James (Groupthink and Eighty Ninety), ‘Here With Me’ is the first of a set of singles that will become Foreign Saints’s debut EP. At the moment, we have mystical dream-pop swirling about us, but I cannot wait to see what else Foreign Saints has up his sleeve. Highly recommended and definitely one to watch.
