Fonzy and Company – Beyond My Control (2021)

As we grow up, we are faced with a changing world that leaves us questioning our place in it. This can often lead to feeling a little out of touch with the rest of the world while still getting glimpses of the good in the world and our place in it. Fonzy and Company have taken these questioning and confusing moments and turned them into their single ‘Beyond My Control’.

While touching on the struggles most of us face, they also consider self-sabotage and how this affects us. This look at the world comes from Fonzy Armour (vocals, guitar), Olivia Jury (vocals), Jed Long (bass), Sam Bennett (drums) and Lauren Paddison (guitar, keys, vocals). Armour, Bennett and Jury have known each other for years from the Bristol music scene and joined with the other members to create a new take on pop punk.

‘Beyond My Control’ hits you with some alternative rock tones from the first moment. The opening guitar has a slightly hazy feeling to it like you are hearing it from a distance. This picks up for the chorus with a blast of punk rock goodness. You easily get swept up by the energy of the melody that makes you want to turn up the volume. There is a freshness to the melody that enhances the elements that seem familiar to anyone who loves some good punk rock. This creates a unique flow to the music that is so engaging.

Armour’s vocals have a rather anthemic feeling to them as he calls out to your soul through his performance. There is a touch of hazy reflection in the opening like those thoughts that hit you just as you are falling asleep. As the song progresses, you are pulled into the slight existential crisis taking place in the lyrics. Through them, you are faced with a world that is changing and you need to adapt to it. While doing this, you are questioning the morals of the world and stuck between feeling naive and having an epiphany.

Fonzy and Company make you want to turn the volume up with their single ‘Beyond My Control’. The track has a blast of familiar punk-rock elements wrapped around a fresh take that is unbelievably engaging. The vocals draw you into the lyrics with a wonderful effortlessness while touching on something most of us cannot put into words.
