Foggy May – Lady Lover (2021)

Once upon a time, in the small town of Westminster in Maryland, three lads decided to come together and create music. Influenced by acts like The Police, The Beatles and Bob Marley, the US-based trio merged elements of jangle-pop and indie-rock into a funky package. With a reputation for engaging performances and heartfelt melodies, Foggy May are reaching audience across genres and continents. With numerous upbeat singles to their name, we have a lot to catch up on with Foggy May; however, we want to begin by introducing you to their latest single ‘Lady Lover’.

Unlike the previous grunge-influenced singles ‘Breasts Draped In Black’ and ‘Weekend Thinker’, ‘Lady Lover’ is a jovial combination of The Beach Boys and The Beatles. Combining upbeat guitars with lighthearted drumlines, the single has a toe-tapping quality; however, it is not overly buoyant with smooth, flowing melodies interspersed throughout the track. This is particularly intriguing as the rises and dips carry you from soothing verses to catchy, high-paced choruses – a very evocative style if you ask me.

Bringing the sounds of the 60s and 70s to modern-day music scenes, Foggy May find the delicate balance between cheesy and cheerful in ‘Lady Lover’. The song has a rich boldness to the melody, courtesy of David Klima’s warm vocals, but there is depth to the seemingly playful single. Alongside Ben O’Brien’s guitar and Reed Rhoads’ drums, Klima touches on finding love in the meaningful lyricism.

Putting their hearts on their sleeves, ‘Lady Lover’ is filled with genuineness and sincere sentimentality. The thing is, while there is a vulnerable innocence to the track it does not have the desperate melancholic reflectiveness of romantic ballads. Instead, Foggy May take us on a bubblegum-pink journey with whimsy, wistfulness and a lingering sense of hopefulness in this endearing song.
