Fly The Nest – Say Hello (2022)
Almost one year since we featured Fly The Nest, Stephen Cooper is back with his enigmatic and engaging sound. Along with his intoxicating original material, Cooper (performing under the name Fly The Nest) writes music for television, film, and advertising companies stating that this is another “facet for his creativity”; however, it is his creative solo project that captures our imagination in this review. 2021 was a breakout year for this artist with notable press describing Cooper as having “intense energy and a huge scope that’s hard to match” (RGM), today we take a gander at his latest single ‘Say Hello’.
His first release in 2022, ‘Say Hello’ is only the beginning of what I think will be another boundary-breaking year. With tinges of 70s rock melded into iconic 90s indie-rock, Fly The Nest transports you to yesteryear with the alternative ‘Say Hello’, but his individuality is retained as Cooper makes the single fitting for a contemporary audience. ‘Say Hello’ may not necessarily be described as an upbeat track; the thing is the crescendos in the arrangement add a certain ethereal light-heartedness to ‘Say Hello’. It is this toe-tapping catchiness that makes the song rather “sing-along”, yet the incorporation of piano in dynamic guitars enhances a sense of poignancy in the haunting track.
Compared to the likes of Oasis, Nothing But Thieves, Catfish and the Bottlemen, and The National, Fly The Nest has a cinematic and kaleidoscopic sound that implants itself in your brain and refuses to leave – ‘Say Hello’ is true evidence of this. Cooper shares that “the song is simple, it’s about the power of someone just saying hello…now just seemed like the right time for this song”. Facing uncertainty at every turn, the Covid pandemic has certainly made merely saying hello and interacting with others a significant experience, and Cooper captures this concept in his sincere, sentimental, soul-chilling single.
