Flora – Long Road Home (2023)
Elegant, charming and heartfelt, UK-based singer-songwriter Flora has a sophisticated sound far exceeding her young years. With engaging performances and a natural penchant for music, Flora is already capturing the hearts of gig-goers. While her shows are hypnotic, so are her recorded melodies. Despite having only two singles beneath her belt, including the song we are about to review, Flora is turning the heads of audiences and music industry professionals alike. Features on BBC Introducing and Spotify Editorial playlist ‘Folk Arc’ have this young musician set for stardom. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Long Road Home’.
Following her debut track ‘Figure It Out’, ‘Long Road Home’ is Flora’s sophomore single and first release in 2023. Building a distinctive pop-influenced sound, ‘Long Road Home’ retains Flora’s modern-day pop tone. Yet, while there is a strong leaning toward the pop genre in the melody, tinges of RnB flow through the single. Strong beats and synths add an electronic element to the track with an inclination to Shawn Mendes-esque sounds. The thing is, while a contemporary vibe comes from ‘Long Road Home’, the nostalgic mellowness of Adele can be heard. In fact, the obscurity in Flora’s vocals shows that uniqueness we hear from Adele and Florence Welch.
Despite the nostalgic flair in her tender singles, Flora is a child of the present. A representative of Gen-Z, her songs touch on the challenges many face in today’s uncertain reality. Touching on issues of mental health, self-discovery, and relationships, the poetic lyricism expresses feelings of frustration, confusion and empowerment.
