Flo Sabeva – Un Souffle Dans La Nuit (2025)

Her father was a “well-respected violin player from Bulgaria who played in the national orchestra and later became koncertmeister in Germany…” Her mum was “touring as a dancer with the world-famous choreographer Maurice Bejart, who used the orchestra for the German leg of the tour…” – and that’s how it all began. Born into an artistic family, Sabeva’s natural musical talent flowed through her veins, well, since birth. Interestingly, while her family leaned toward classical music, UK-based Sabeva has an ear for classical but chooses to push the genre, experimenting with contemporary sounds like electronica or shoegaze. The latest addition to her discography is the single, ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’.

Following the 2024 single, ‘Sunken Dreams’, ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’ is the first single – a taster, if you will – from Sabeva’s upcoming release, The Sophia Sessions. Describing The Sophia Sessions, Sabeva explains:

“This project is a tribute to Sofia – a city where my father worked as a violinist and that has deeply inspired me, both personally and musically… Each piece feels like a chapter in my own story, and I hope listeners will resonate with it.”

Joined by the European Recording Orchestra, ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’ captures a sense of fragility and vulnerability in its moving melody. Lying somewhere between pop and classical, the orchestra bring something…well, I’m unsure really what it is. A modern-day ballad but lifted by the soul-stirring strings and piano. A composition flooded with raw emotion offered through flowing, soothing, heartfelt sounds, ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’ is a breath of raw emotion wrapped in a languid musical wrapper.

As a film composer, Sabeva knows her stuff when it comes to creating intriguing and captivating melodies to complement a film’s scene. I imagine ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’ as the opening to a dramatic romance, but one of those filled with tragedy and lessons to be learned. Perfect for the intensity of French actor Alain Delon, but with a hint of lighter moments, ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’ is a sophisticated flair of music, making me eager for her The Sophia Sessions.

In addition to the single, Flo Sabeva released an official music video for ‘Un Souffle Dans La Nuit’. You can view the video below and/or on her YouTube channel.
