Flemish In The North – Snow Crocs (2022)
The result of two creative kids coming together to make some cool tunes, Flemish In The North is just that – cool. Combining the talent of multi-instrumentalists Christopher Davis (vocals, guitar and bass) and Everett B. DeLuca III (vocals, guitar, keyboard/piano), the US-based duo is lively, engaging, and just a ton of fun to listen to. While they have only one song to their discography, the lads have already started turning heads with coverage from blogs and playlists. Come with us as we dip our toes into their debut single ‘Snow Crocs’, proverbial dipping, of course.
Influenced by different indie and indie-rock bands like Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver, Flemish In The North has a hard-hitting, bold style. Yet, the lads bring together their diverse influences making Flemish In The North hard to categorise. The melodic arrangement of pounding drums, heavy guitars and interspersed synths immediately sets you drifting off on a sonic river. As fantastic and soothing as the melody is, there is an element that gives you a bit of a glance at the tumultuous sonic waves – the vocals. Both Davis and DeLuca’s vocals are rich and powerfully bold, but it is the interplay between smoothness and distortion that adds obscurity.
What I love about Flemish In The North and ‘Snow Crocs’ is how they keep the song light-hearted and laidback but also add an intensity to the track. An almost palpable grittiness exists within the melody which is amusing, exciting, entertaining, and impressive. Moreover, just as fun as the melody is, the lyrical theme is as smile-inducing! Davis explains that “the song itself doesn’t have much of a significant meaning…it was written in stream-of-consciousness fashion. Some lines are utterly ridiculous including their enjoyment of gin and French press coffee, as well as the frustration of therapy sessions getting cut off right as the emotional baggage starts getting exercised…” – it is this sonic ridiculousness that keeps me hitting the repeat button with a grin plastered on my face.
