Flame – Gravity (2025)

Unafraid to dig deep into the grittier sides of life, singer-songwriter Flame “…delves into the intricate shades of growth, self-discovery, and transformation”. Using a blend of grunge, shoegaze, soft rock and even a hint of indie-rock peeping from the back, she captures the tenderness and depth of raw emotion in a wandering cascade of kaleidoscopic music.

Flame suggests fire, and when you consider fires, there is a sense of danger in the mix. Yet, as much as flames have dark undertones, there is beauty as a flame is warm, hopeful, and links to rebirth from ashes – phoenix, anyone? In her moving melodies, the Scottish musician takes the multifaceted sides of a flame and captures the good, turning dark grittiness into something resilient and light. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Gravity’.

Following her well-received 2024 EP, Pride of the Lamb, Flame saunters into 2025 with the new track ‘Gravity’. Drawing on the sounds of 90s alternative rock and grunge, one might catch an underlying hint of The Cranberries wistfully lingering in the back; however, a heavier lift of folk crashes across ‘Gravity’, bringing a Carole King attitude to the ambient soundscape.

Soft and soothing, a concoction of dynamic guitars entwines with percussion in a shimmering flood of music. A wisp of piano edges in at the fore but becomes stronger as the song progresses. For me, the crescendo of the acoustic piano blends in the harmonic arrangement, whispering life into a soft, gentle melody, but simultaneously infusing a haunting mystery.

Melodically, ‘Gravity’ is a warm rush of music embracing you in a big hug – the traditional Italian flair making way in the overall guitar. Yet, it is the poetic lyricism woven through the tune that enhances its theme and message. Executed with her obscure vocals, Flame explains:

“Life can feel overwhelming when everything seems uncertain, but I’ve come to realise that unpredictability is part of its beauty. ‘Gravity’ is about finding strength in chaos and persisting even when the path ahead is far from clear.”
