Five O Fives – Am I On My Own (2022)

Compared to the likes of White Stripes and Royal Blood, UK-based band Five O Fives has a hard-hitting sound pulsating through their powerful music. Typically falling into the contemporary alternative rock genre, the Birmingham foursome gives us something familiar; however, a heavier edginess exists in their style creating music that is utterly distinct. Featured on blogs like Dead Good Music, Indie Midlands and various playlists, Five O Five is turning heads far beyond their local scene. The EP Am I On My Own is the latest addition to their discography.

Following their well-received single ‘Keep Your Secrets Close’, Am I On My Own is a four-track evolution of their sound. Creatively influenced by Royal Blood and Arctic Monkeys, Five O Fives’ debut EP is filled with heavier tones and deeper themes. Inspired by provocative topics, the band delicately explores themes of loneliness in Am I On My Own – and I’m talking about getting into the nitty gritty of loneliness. The pain of being isolated, lost and fearful in a desperate situation – nitty gritty.

Opening with the song ‘Poison Game’, Five O Fives hit you in the gut with a combination of dynamic guitars and pounding drums. This hard-hitting melodic arrangement continues throughout the EP from ‘I Came Around’ to ‘Keep Your Secrets Close’; however, versatility is shown as each track brings individuality to Am I On My Own. Succinctly put, Am I On My Own is a bundle of four rock-inspired but diverse songs.

One of the more powerful elements of Five O Fives music is the bold vocals of charismatic frontwoman Alice Bloor. This is not to say Joel Faulkner (drums), Nico Pickard (bass) or Andreas Mouzourides (guitar) are in any way unimpressive; in fact, it is the melodic arrangement that builds up the pulsating grunginess of Five O Fives. Yet, Bloor’s bold voice seems to have a palpable grunge with a smooth, soothing richness – think a Hayley Williams meets Lzzy Hale. Interestingly enough, while each element comes together in a harmonic whole, they also have an individual prominence showing the skills of all players.

So, what is my opinion of Am I On My Own and Five O Fives? Toe-tapping and soul-stirring, Five O Fives can effortlessly ensnare your senses with their sound and Am I On My Own is their tool for intoxication. Listening to this debut EP is like feeling fire run through your veins and rattle about your brain, but you’ll love every scorching second.
