Filmm – Make Believe Penitentiary (2022)

Described by music blog Thoughts Words Action as a highly creative Bristol-based indie artist, Filmm can capture audiences with his unique sound. With only two singles to his name and just over a year of releasing music (according to Spotify), Filmm can be considered a newbie in the indie music scene; however, the sophistication of his melodies presents a more mature artist. Come with us as we dip our toes into his latest single ‘Make Believe Penitentiary’ – metaphorical dipping of course.

A self-proclaimed “sleek and bleak” singer-songwriter who “writes songs to despair to”, Filmm’s brief discography might be labelled as those murder mystery songs – think Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Yet, while there is a dark and dismal theme to his music, ‘Make Believe Penitentiary’ has a soothing quality in its murky melody. Collaborating with bassist Mark Neary (Adele, U2, Noel Gallagher) and drummer Mat Hector (Iggy Pop, Grace Jones, Razorlight), ‘Make Believe Penitentiary’ harmonically weaves hard-hitting drums, slick synths and dynamic guitars in its arrangement. Interestingly enough, while the melody has its own haunting, it is Filmm’s obscure vocals that up the ante.

Filmm explains that ‘Make Believe Penitentiary’ was “written from a place of acute anxiety [and] is a song about feeling trapped inside your own head…yearning to be set free.” The desperation, inner conflict and frustrating vulnerability are clearly heard in Filmm’s vocal execution. Cinematic and kaleidoscopic, the song immediately tosses listeners into a sonic whirlpool; however, it is Filmm’s delicate tones that bring a theatrical quality to the soundscape.

In addition to the single, Filmm released an official music video for ‘Make Believe Penitentiary’. You can view the video below or on his official YouTube channel:
