Filip Dahl – Walking Towards Eternity (2022)

Beginning his music career in the 70s as a guitarist in Norwegian rock bands, multi-instrumentalist Filip Dahl has notable experience as a performer. In addition to this, Dahl also has skills as a music engineer and record producer founding the renowned Trondheim-based Brygga Studio in the 80s and 90s. When the 21st century hit, Dahl chose to take a break from the music scene but, and much to our joy, he returned with the album Dark Angels and White Demons in 2016. Come with us as we dive into his song ‘Walking Towards Eternity’ (metaphorically, of course).

Taken off his EP Storyteller, ‘Walking Towards Eternity’ is a guitar-based instrumental track aiming to, according to Dahl, “…tell a story to the listener only by the tones from the guitar…” Not one to review instrumental tracks, I was a little apprehensive and unsure when approaching the song; however, I was pleasantly surprised. From the first chord, I was blown away by the calm, charm and soothing nature of ‘Walking Towards Eternity’. Instead of working into a relaxing tone, Dahl captivated me immediately and I felt my soul seem to soar in the beautiful artistry.

Definitely driven by the electric guitar, ‘Walking Towards Eternity’ has a blues-rock feel about it with a soul-stirring quality; however, it was the acoustic guitar and interspersed piano that altered the dimension of the track from rock to something more sophisticated. I am not saying rock is not sophisticated, but there was another element to the song that seemed more mature in its quiet way.

I could compare Filip Dahl to Gary Moore but I’m not certain that is entirely fair as Dahl has a sound that is purely Filip Dahl. I find that the rock music scene can be a little “all over the place” in today’s setting, but Dahl brought a reviving sigh of relief in his bluesy song. My one complaint about ‘Walking Towards Eternity’ is that it is too short! Fortunately, all the other tracks on Storyteller are as enchanting and captivating.
