figaro – Maybe Cherry (2024)

Inspired by life in all its grit and glory, singer-songwriter figaro explores triumph and tragedy in his moving music. Delving into the realm of imperfect perfection, the US-based artist traverses industrial, shoegaze, post-punk, indie-rock, and several slices of other genres building an unconventional sonic brand – perfect if you’re seeking complementary perfection within potentially colliding imperfections. This is my introduction to figaro (also known as Claudio Tarchi), so I was unsure what to expect but eager to take a listen. Come with me as we leap into figaro’s discography with ‘Maybe Cherry’.

Figaro – the name inspires a link to the famous opera character in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro; however, it’s not quite what we have here. Eclectic and experimental, this figaro lilts to the symphonic obscurity of Mozart but with a modern-day, synth-driven electronic twist. Following his well-received EP Sometime Together, ‘Maybe Cherry’ is figaro’s stomp into 2024 pre-empting his upcoming EP Good Bones (set for release in November).

As if dealing with the duality of imperfection and perfection, ‘Maybe Cherry’ melds raw gruffness and youthful immaturity with sophisticated elegance in its production. Well-textured, the synth-drive track brings bold beats alongside shimmering synths offering pulsating brashness in smooth flow. Add figaro’s haunting vocals and there’s a kick of natural warmth hidden behind an electronic-tinged haziness.

Duality, it’s all about duality with ‘Maybe Cherry’. The clip of hard-hitting weightiness lingers in laidback serenity, while a shove of vintage post-punk blends with contemporary synth-pop edginess. The melodic aspect of ‘Maybe Cherry’ is complex, but the lyricism is what brings profoundness to the track.

A heartfelt poem exploring the “struggles of self-improvement and imperfection…”, figaro resonates with audiences across generations in this timeless theme. Optimistic and empowering, ‘Maybe Cherry’ is a tribute to accepting yourself, finding the commitment to self-discovery and walking toward the bright light at the end of a challenging journey.
