Fat Trout Trailer Park – Belt (2022)

Fat Trout Trailer Park have a lot to say with their single ‘Belt’ which takes on the capitalist culture that has gripped the modern world. Through the critique of their lyrics, they hit out at all the negative aspects of capitalism, from nepotism and cronyism, to the culture of narcissism it has created. A blasting rebuff of late-capitalism, the single touches on political polarisation using menacing melodics with rather deadpan vocals.

The provocative hit is brought to visual life through the story woven into the outstanding music video directed by Gabby Bryan. This rather cutthroat look at the world is another step forward for this post-punk duo. While unleashing this critique, they continue their ascension through the New York live music scene, gaining fans each time someone listens to their music.

‘Belt’ hits the ground running with a blistering blast of guitars, bringing an almost anachronistic vibe to the single. This slides out into an addictive drum line that builds a sense of anticipation that rocks through your body, preparing it to bounce to the sound of the melody. Woven into this is the guitar line that carries a delightful touch of menace. Everything crashes together for a rousing sound that leads you to an unleashing of inner rage. At times, the instrumentation churns and twists with a complicated mix of emotions mimicking the boiling of rage inside that is just waiting to find an outlet. It is a really emotive melody that packs a hard punch of anger and frustration that is given a direction by the vocals. The power of the music fades in the last seconds of the single as it reaches out into the ether, letting some of your emotions settle.

While the melody is blasting its way through your senses and rousing your frustration at the world, the vocals use a really interesting delivery to get your attention. There is a slight echo feeling to the vocals like they are calling out to you over a loudspeaker from a distance. The energy of the track has been infused into each word while the overall delivery has this great sense of composure. The contrast between the vocals and melody is fantastic and really brings an underlying message of the track to life as they portray the inner turmoil and outer composure needed to survive in the modern world. As the single progresses, the vocals lose some of the deadpan vibes for a light rally call that makes you want to shout out with them.

Fat Trout Trailer Park blast a gripping critique of the modern world into our ears with ‘Belt’, while masterfully contrasting a frustrated melody with composed vocals. Every aspect of the single has been artfully crafted to mimic how we make it through the world, while hitting out at the structures that define our existence. It is a blister rebuff of the modern status quo wrapped up in an addictive push of fantastic music.
