Fat Cat Affair – Empty Bed (2023)

In Disney’s The Aristocats, the feline jazz band sang that “everybody wants to be a cat because a cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at” and man, Fat Cat is all that. Whispers on the streets of Europe’s main cities, everyone’s talking about the legendary Fat Cat; now, he’s here to tell us all about it. In 2022, the fantastic feline hit the digital world releasing his well-received debut single ‘Eyes Full of Tears’. Followed by the critically acclaimed ‘Up At Dawn’ and 2023’s ‘I Wonder’, the Fat Cat Affair slithered into the brains of people across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Empty Bed’.

We all have to deal with neighbours arguing at some point, particularly considering walls can be so thing, but it is Fat Cat that took inspiration from the nightly arguments. He explains, “I was living in a flat in London where the walls were so thin, I could hear everything that happened next door. They would argue all night whilst I was playing guitar. The more they argued, the more I played. We were almost like a band except they didn’t know it. Sadly, they eventually broke up, but it did inspire me to write this song.” Thus, ‘Empty Bed’ was created.

A cat that everyone wants to work with, ‘Empty Bed’ sees the stylings of vocalists Janet Tabaka and Costie Payne weaving through Fat Cat’s melodic tapestry. While inspired by nightly arguments, ‘Empty Bed’ touches on the aftermath of regret and yearning where you just want to get back together. As a duet, Tabaka’s soulful voice shimmers while Payne’s RnB vocals sliver across – both hoping for another chance, another love and another moment in time. All the while, Fat Cat beats beneath melding heavy basslines, steady drums, a jazzy guitar and even the swoosh of a Nigerian gospel choir to end everything off.

Sleek, smooth and filled with a tender passion sensually laid across an almost four-minute track, ‘Empty Bed’ scratches the surface of relationships and lays emotions bare.
