Fantømex – Terraformed (2022)
Described by several music blogs as passionate, pure and unparalleled, US-based Fantømex draws together elements of punk and alternative rock in a unique way. Originally a project between long-time friends Isaac Crouch (guitar) and Edwin Mericle (drums), Fantømex jammed on and off for four years. In 2017, the lads chose to take the band to the next level recruiting vocalist Abigail Taylor and bassist Max Miller adding a unique spin to Fantømex’s sound. Featured on Roadie Music, Edgar Allan Poets, YMX, Rising Artists Music Blog, and numerous playlists, the female-fronted group are reaching audiences on an international level. The latest addition to their well-received discography is Terraformed.
Already on our radar with their EP Constant Agenda, Fantømex is a profound, energetic and intriguing sonic experience. The sophomore EP Terraformed highlights the importance of evolution moving to heavier, louder, hard-hitting sounds; thus, showcasing the group’s versatility and growth as artists. Opening with the track ‘Fantomcatz’, Fantømex bring a strong punk flavour to audiences. Melding pounding drums and dynamic guitars with Taylor’s bold vocals, there is an almost frenzied pace to the song, particularly with Taylor’s almost screaming execution. What I love about this track is the movements from fast and crazy to softer and soothing in the well-layered arrangement.
Moving from the almost five-minute madness of ‘Fantomcatz’, the next track ‘White Hole’ retains the frenzied state. Reminding me greatly of a hyped-up Hole, the lads back up Taylor’s rich vocals with a feverish melody. I would say the track is guitar-driven, but the power of Mericle’s drums makes all instrumentation prominent while still coming together as a unique whole.
Ending with the tracks ‘Gaslight’ and ‘Machine’, Fantømex demonstrates their passion for music. ‘Machine’ might be my favourite track on Terraformed as there is a constant transition from energetic to laidback sounds. When listening to this song, and all the others, you can feel the thematic frustration rising through your soul leading you into a sonic whirlpool. Fantømex shares that Terraformed is “…heavily influenced by both worldly and personal events over the past two years; dealing with subjects like the pandemic, existential crises, the illusion of control and finding true love.” You can almost feel the frustration, despair, empowerment, conflict and anxiety in a palpable way.
I love the group, the EP and everything about it, but I have to say Taylor’s vocals are what truly blew me away. Smooth at one point but screaming the next. Touching and tender but brutal and raw. It acts as a shining silver thread running through the kaleidoscopic sonic tapestry. Don’t get me wrong, all the band members are outstanding, and I appreciate everything they do. Ultimately, Terraformed is intoxicating, intense and shining addition to the insatiable Fantømex’s repertoire.
