Faerie – showgirl (2022)
A melding of jazz, soul, pop and soft rock, the solo music project Faerie takes us on a journey through the mind of singer-songwriter Christine Lam. From her haunting vocals to shimmering synth soundscape, Lam has been named by notable blogs like Pop Passion, CLUNK, GRRRL Music, Earmilk, Clout and Obscure Sound (to name but a few) as an artist to be watched. In fact, Obscure Sound referred to the indie-pop musician as taking listeners on a “…gorgeously melodic adventure with hooky pop and psych-rock punches…” The latest addition to her well-received single is the track ‘showgirl’.
On the heels of her track ‘k-town’, Faerie retains her wistful and whimsical sound with sultry, soulful vocals slithering throughout the melodic arrangement in ‘showgirl’. Recorded with producer Matty Bedrosian, the harmonic arrangement uses soft guitars, sophisticated synths and a melancholic organ leaning toward the vulnerable desperation in Faerie’s music. Described as a “celestial ballad”, ‘showgirl’ tips you into a swirling sonic whirlpool with kaleidoscopic lights flitting before your eyes. A special note needs to be made to the rock-inspired guitar bringing a hint of old-school 80s rock to the modern-day alternative pop song.
Similar to ‘k-town’, ‘showgirl’ explores human fragility in the most delicate way. While the previous material touched on the intense emotions felt when dealing with lingering trauma from childhood, the new single is a song of rebirth. Faerie explains that she is “…a recovering people pleaser, which is essentially the inspiration for this song. It’s all the built-up anger and confusion I felt when I allowed myself to be surrounded by toxic individuals…the worst part is that I let it happen because I hate the thought of people hating me. It came back to bite me when it took a toll on my mental health…my old self died when I left them, ‘showgirl’ is a cinematic retelling of this experience.”
Soulful, moving and sentimental, Faerie once again captures your heart and brings a tear to your eye with her enchanting and oddly enough empowering single ‘showgirl’.
