Faerie – K-Town (2022)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Christine Lam, Faerie is an “indie-pop manifestation of Lam’s fantasies and daydreams”. In an interview with Clout, Faerie shared that she embraced her passion for music early on writing songs and learning to play instruments at a young age – “I’ve been making music since I was a child, really. I recently found old notebooks filled with lyrics and stories from when I was about 10 or 11 years old…I remember teaching myself piano on a small keyboard so I could accompany my lyrics and vocal melodies…” Since then, Faerie has built a strong following with features on notable international blogs, radio stations and playlists. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘K-Town’.

Following her 2021 single ‘re: invite to the moon’, Faerie adopts an indie-pop meets synth-pop sound in ‘K-Town’. Recorded with LA producer Matty Bedrosian, ‘K-Town’ retains Faerie’s whimsical synth soundscape but incorporates dynamic guitar riffs adding an edgy tinge to the track. As with ‘re: invite to the moon’, there is a leaning toward old-school soul with the arrangement; however, a contemporary pop sound captures the attention of modern-day audiences.

While the melody can certainly hold its own as something in which you can lose yourself, Faerie’s hypnotic vocals add a charming flow to the track. Whimsical and toe-tapping, ‘K-Town’ has a wistful nostalgic sound; however, the light-hearted flow of the track hides a more poignant message. Faerie explains that while there is a shimmering arrangement, a sense of slow-burn disarray exists – “…once a place of escape, Faerie is unexpectedly revisited by suppressed feelings and traumatic secrets from her teenage years that still linger today.”

Sincere, sentimental, genuine and hypnotic, ‘K-Town’ slithers into your ear, rattles about your brain and sends shivers down your spine. My one complaint is that it ended too soon.
