Ezrae – My Oh My (2021)
The brainchild of singer-songwriter Eve Sheldon, Ezrae is a talented young artist with an unforgettable sound. Influenced by contemporary artists Harry Styles, The 1975, Chase Atlantic and The 1975, Ezrae is definitely representing the sound of a new generation. Still very young, the songstress is only a teenager but her voice is mature and sophisticated beyond her years. Alright, she is only one song in and a newbie in the scene, however, she isn’t a shrinking violet. Featured on AAA Backstage, RGM and now The Other Side Reviews, Ezrae is slowly reaching audiences across the globe with her debut single ‘My Oh My’.
Recorded in Birmingham’s The Song Lab with Jonny Amos, ‘My Oh My’ has a superb modern-day melody to it. As I said before, Ezrae is the sound of a young generation and she shows this by merging indie-pop with indie-rock. She shares that “…I wanted to keep this track raw with as many organic instruments as I could without synths or massive effects”, so ‘My On My’ has some grittiness about it. It is this raw instrumental foundation that enhances her poignant lyricism making her quite innovative.
Touching and charming, the song is a coming-of-age track exploring relationships and insecurities. Ezrae says that “…I just wanted to make the most indirect song about a boy I fancied last year…we were both too nervous so actually become anything more than friends, but then he stabbed me in the back and ended up dating the girl who promised me was “just a friend”. I dodged a bullet by not dating him because he’s a bit of a player.” Is that not the sweetest and most terrible thing ever?
Walking a delicate line between childish innocence and mature reflection, ‘My Oh My’ is filled with heart, hope and hard truths. In her own way, Ezrae exposes her sensitivities and vulnerabilities in the song only to bring in brutal existential truths. It’s not great getting our hearts broken, but it’s awesome when you’re the one that got away and you know it! Loving this music and can’t wait for more Ezrae.
