Ewan MacFarlane – Tangled (2022)

At some point in the 80s, a term became quite popular in modern pop/rock music – power ballad. It was a term coined to explain loud rock bands playing slow, sometimes aching ballads with strength and gusto. These days, the music has not only changed but the power ballad term got lost somewhere. Maybe it would be a bit hard to lump Ewan MacFarlane’s latest single ‘Tangled’, one of the two that are set to introduce his upcoming album Milk, as a power ballad. Yet, it is a song played by the former Apollo 440 singer/frontman with both strength and gusto, as well as a great feeling about what a good ballad should sound like.

“‘Tangled’ comes across as an almost possessive type of love song, in the realms of ‘Every Breath You Take’. Although it screams neediness, it also exudes a more in-depth meaning about its tangible content. It’s about being caught up so much in your lover that you almost can’t get close enough, and therefore you need to be literally “tangled” in each other with the twists and turns of life. That desire exceeds anything that life throws at you.” – Ewan MacFarlane on ‘Tangled’

Actually, it is a song that has more connection to some more current musical trends than classic rock. MacFarlane picks on the Americana leaning of artists like Tom Petty and former The Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg, adding touches of hardened edges of Foo Fighters and covering all that with his soulful vocals that seem to still be in full force.

Yet, this is not only an introduction to the forthcoming album but also an acoustic solo tour MacFarlane will embark on as a special guest to GUN in August before embarking upon a full band headline tour at the end of September.
