Eve Whelan – Wasted Youth (2022)

Embracing music at a young age, Irish singer-songwriter Eve Whelan joined her local marching band at age 9. She then went on to take vocal lessons at age 11 and gained a senior certification in Music Theatre and Popular Singing from the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Alright, so we’re not exactly going back decades when speaking about her love for music (Eve is only 19 years old), but it just shows how passionate she is about the art.

Featured on Indie Echo Podcast, Clout Magazine, Less Than 1000 Followers, Roadie Music, The Clonmel Podcast and Infomusic (to name a few), Whelan is turning heads on an international scale. Described as a musician who “…caresses the listener’s hearts through her ecstatic symphony…” (Sinusoidal Music), Whelan can hypnotise you, hold your heart in her hand and lead you on a magnificent sonic journey. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Wasted Youth’.

Her first release in 2022, ‘Wasted Youth’ shows an evolution in Whelan’s sound from the ethereal indie-pop sound to more sophisticated avante-garde melodies. Soft, soothing and sweet, ‘Wasted Youth’ elegantly weaves Whelan’s gentle vocals with the harmonic tune. Acoustic-inspired, there is a slight haunting behind the acoustic guitar and surreal voice. What I love is how a steady, simplistic drumbeat enters the arrangement halfway through bringing a contemporary soul feeling.

Whelan explains that ‘Wasted Youth’ “was written when I first moved away to begin college. It’s about feeling completely alone and disconnected even while surrounded by crowds of people. I hated where I was living, it was too far outside of the city and Covid restrictions meant my glass groups were divided up and some classes online. There were no social events taking place…I just felt I was spending my youth stressed and that I was running out of time…” Interestingly enough, this despair and desperation are elegantly expressed through the hazy, haunting soundscape.

Sincere and sentimental, Eve Whelan reaches into your soul with her single ‘Wasted Youth’.
