Eve Casino – Here’s The Thing (2022)

Dipping their toes into various genres such as blues, psychedelia and punk rock, it is clear that US-based Eve Casino has an eclectic sound to share with the masses. Featured on notable music review blogs, the foursome has been described as “…sincere, raw and manages to transfer strong emotions” (Edgar Allan Poets) and “…incredible and easy to follow…” (Lost In The Nordics). Add the coverage from international playlists and radio stations like iHeart Radio, and it is clear Eve Casino is reaching far beyond its North American borders.

On the heels of their well-received single ‘Fifty Buck Billy’, Eve Casino explores a plethora of genres in their new EP Here’s The Thing. Sarah Jickings from Lost In The Nordics shares that the new EP shows “…how unique and rich their sound is”, and we have to agree with this esteemed music critic. From the opening track ‘Hotter’ to the closing song ‘Summertime Dreamin’, the talented foursome blends elements of blues, alternative rock and classic rock into Here’s The Thing, tinged with scatterings of psychedelic-rock in the mix.

Recorded on their independent label, Bird Theory Records, Eve Casino enhance the level of sophistication in their tracks; however, this does not mean their previous material was unsophisticated in its arrangement – just a little raw. Interestingly enough, while mature production is heard in the elegant tracks, the distinctive rawness exists in Here’s The Thing.

I could say that my favourite aspect of Here’s The Thing is how Eve Casino retain a rock-inspired edge to their various tracks, particularly with ‘Before I Hit The Ground’ and ‘Little Gypsy Queen’. Yet, it is more the obscurity of songs like ‘Abercrombie Zombie’ that both show their versatility and insert something totally out of their comfort zone into the mix. Nods to old-school rock, blues and even grunge are heard, but familiarity and freshness can be heard in songs like ‘Hotter’ making them retro and modern-day.

It is difficult to choose a favourite song on Here’s The Thing, but I believe Eve Casino shine brightest in ‘Short Circuit’. A hard-hitting song with a softness flowing through the soul-soaring melody. This is by no means saying the other tracks are not soul-soaring, it’s just that ‘Short Circuit’ seems to bridge that edge of grittiness, gruffness and smooth flow.
