Eva Westphal – She’s Mine (2021)
Despite being only 20 years old at the time of writing this, Eva Westphal has made a name for herself among independent and established artists. She began writing songs as a teenager and, as the years progressed, found herself singing at music festivals and notable venues. Intent on writing stories to raise awareness of mental health, many of Westphal’s songs take a personal stance connecting with listeners of all ages. The latest addition to her growing discography is ‘She’s Mine’.
Influenced by the likes of Stevie Nicks, Ingrid Michaelson, Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse, Westphal’s sound oozes female empowerment. Using a simplistic acoustic sound with a personal narrative, Westphal’s music seems highly relatable for audiences. Shoving her experiences into heartwarming lyricism and tender melodies, there is a deeper connection in her pop tunes. However, the depth of content is not only evident in the charming melody but in the lyricism as well.
Nodding to contemporary pop sounds, one might imagine the song to be superficial “diary writing” style; however, the love behind her lyrics hold a poignant meaning. Penned as a love song for her girlfriend, there is great joviality in the flowing tune plastering a smile on my face. Yet, while there is an innocent buoyancy, Westphal incorporates a deeper understanding, acceptance and dedication within the track. It is this upbeat naivety accompanied by a deeper devotion that I find captivating.
In addition to her single, Eva Westphal released a lyrics video for ‘She’s Mine’. Heartfelt in its innocence, Westphal uses several personal images and items to represent her love for her partner. Unfortunately, the rapid image transitions made it difficult for me to view and I could not watch it in its entirety. Note: the video can cause migraines and seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy, so I suggest you watch it at your own discretion.
