ettie – Starting Again (2021)
Just one year ago, singer-songwriter graced our pages with her emotional single ‘hello, i’ve got anxiety’ exploring mental health topics in the Millenial Generation (read our review here). I mention this because ‘hello, i’ve got anxiety’ is one of the most memorable songs I have come across to date. Her obscure vocals and the blunt lyricism just make it mind-blowing and difficult to forget.
Alright, all good and well but who is ettie? Based in London, the talented songstress uses her English Literature degree to her advantage in expressing adolescent angst. Her talent for concocting powerful melodies with intricate lyrical value is unmatched in many indie music scenes, and that’s what makes her unforgettable. Featured in Chalpit Records, Less Than 1000 Followers, Nexus Music Blog, Sinusoidal Music and many more blogs, we are not the only ones singing her praises. She returns with her stunning single ‘Starting Again’.
Influenced by the likes of Paramore, Avril Lavigne, Pale Waves and James Blake, ettie is renowned for her tear-jerking, soul-stirring sounds. While Paramore certainly has an upbeat tone with their pop-punk sound, ettie finds a way of capturing this high-paced quality in softer, more flowing melodies. ‘Starting Again’ is particularly interesting as it begins with an acoustic intimacy but transitions to a heavier, alternative rock design. It is this ability to move from one genre to another effortlessly that showcases ettie’s versatility.
Known for her provocative and intimate lyrical content, ettie takes on the issue of identity in this conceptual piece. The personal narrative enhances the poignancy of ‘Starting Again’ but the tenderness of the execution seems to make the track an anthem for people looking to begin again. Touching on her “coming out”, ettie passionately embraces a new, hopefully, happier experience engaging people in the same situation. The message is clear: be proud of who you are, be willing to take the risk and find yourself in dazzling relief.
One element I love in ‘Starting Again’ is the crescendo from poignant vocals to a hard-hitting, powerful guitar ending. It is as if she takes us through her story of finding herself and ultimately screaming to the world “this is who I am”. Showing a strong similarity to Hayley Williams, ettie can captivate you; however, it is her obscurity and vitality that makes her stand alongside Williams instead of imitating her. Look out Paramore, ettie is on your heels!
