Ethan Senger – Standing Still (2023)
The last time we heard from Ethan Senger, he embraced us with his captivating vocals in the pop with an indie-rock twist single ‘I’m Fine’. Using his new single ‘Standing Still’, Senger surrounds listeners with a folk melody followed by a pop-rock chaser. Known for his engaging performances and bold stage presence, the US-based singer-songwriter garners a large following from his live shows. Yet, it is not only the gigs that make an impression. With coverage from international blogs, radio shows, and various playlists, Senger is reaching audiences far beyond his US borders.
Taken from his sophomore EP, Standing Still – an album that “explores the oft relatable themes of unresolved emotional wounds from childhood, as well as feigned indifference and the games people play when it comes to cultivating meaningful relationships, and also stagnancy due to fear of failure…” – the title track touches on newfound freedom and self-discovery evolved from personal fear.
Opening with steady drums, a soothing guitar and Senger’s warm vocals, you imagine a soothing pop song tenderly arranged with strong textures. Well, you do get all of this with an extra dose of tender folk-pop poetry. The inclusion of a soft piano swirls about with a light laidback vibe; however, this is until the forceful pop-rock sensibility crashes forth closer to the end.
Tipping his hat at 90s pop-rock, bold guitars meet pounding drums with a forceful attitude. Warm vocals remain but there is a bite in their execution. It is as if Ethan Senger is standing up and demanding we pay attention in the politest way possible. Delicate fragility and warmth are replaced by a hard-hitting blast of rock showcasing Senger’s versatility as an artist. Interestingly, as I mentioned, this song is about empowerment, freedom and self-discovery. Perhaps this aligns with the quick change in tone moving from folky pop to a fierce rocking, um, rocker.
