Empty Machines – Luna (2023)
Brand spanking new with those bright shiny “never been used” twinkles, Empty Machines can be considered newbies in the UK music scene. Yet, while they are only a dash of colour in the massive sonic tapestry, the Scotland-based duo are already turning heads. Featured on Amazing Radio and Music Arena GH, Thomas Crawford and Jodie Helena are reaching audiences beyond their family and friends. Originally formed as a solo instrumental project by Crawford, Empty Machines was already something special. Enlisting the vocals of Jodie Helena pushed it to something extraordinary. Come with us as we delve into their music.
Adopting the DIY approach to music production, Empty Machines’ ‘Luna’ was penned, recorded, mixed and produced in Crawford’s home studio. Filled with ethereal synths and beats, ‘Luna’ could fall into the realm of electronic pop or dance; however, darkness exists in the melody transcending any commercial electropop sound. Leaning toward post-punk with heavy rock sensibilities, the rise and fall of swooning synths oscillate between light and dark sonic swirls.
The melody can hold you captive with its intoxicating flow, but Jodie Helena’s vocals add that tinge of haunting to ‘Luna’. Hushed but with a gruffness floating through the harmonic vocals, Helena captures both warmth and a disconnected haunting in her dulcet tones.
Some people say you should never release an overwhelmingly fantastic single as your debut because it sets expectations that might not be met. In my opinion, ‘Luna’ is outstanding and unforgettable so will Empty Machines raise the bar with their next release? I have a strong feeling they will. Highly recommended and ones to watch!
In addition to the single, Empty Machines released an official music video for ‘Luna’. You can view the video on their YouTube channel. Please note: the music video contains lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy.
