Emotion Kapture – Some Kind Of Star (2024)
Music is magical; it encapsulates raw emotion, acts as solace, raises you up or tears you down – whatever way you look at it, it is reality balled up in a sonic wrapper. UK-based Emotion Kapture, in their words, “captures your emotions when you listen, so years later you can feel them again…” Not heard of Emotion Kapture before, well they’re rather new so the duo are minnows in a sonic shark pool; then again, considering their music is being described as banging, they’ll be climbing the sonic ladder soon. Come with us as we delve into the lads’ debut single, ‘Some Kind Of Star’.
A precursor to their upcoming album, tentatively named Breaking The Immersion, ‘Some Kind Of Star’ is a breath of fresh air into vintage post-punk. Influenced by the likes of Depeche Mode, a nostalgic whisper of 80s/90s music oozes from multi-instrumentalist Tony Denmade and vocalist Pete Jago. Recorded and produced at Denmade’s home, the swirling combination of pounding drums, dynamic guitars, bold bass and slips of synths is a hypnotic rush of kaleidoscopic music. Yet, while each instrument has a prominent role in the overall melody, its harmonic union has you travelling in a bubble of sound.
One aspect I love about discovering “raw bands” is the vulnerability and youthful innocence in the song’s production. As if faced with a live session, the grittiness, ruggedness, and, well, rawness is sensational. Emotion Kapture immerses you in a palpable hum of sound; however, the profound lyricism ups the ante of ‘Some Kind Of Star’. The band explains:
“’Some Kind Of Star’ is inspired, in part, by the commodification of music, how it is something that is attached to fame and the way people look, as well as who they are and how they become a product for others to consume… This song is about rising and falling and the effects we carry with us from our experiences, as well as about the question of whether we will carry on.”
In addition to the single, Emotion Kapture released an official lyric video for ‘Some Kind Of Star’. You can view the video below or on their YouTube channel.
