EMMY – Laika Party (2025)
While she might be a new name to my ears, Norwegian vocalist EMMY is already a well-known musician reaching international audiences and garnering a loyal following far beyond her Irish borders. With over a decade in the music industry, her eclectic nature and innovative nature have seen her compete in Norway’s song contests MGPjr and MGP in 2015 and 2021 respectively. Skip ahead to 2025 and EMMY reaches us from the Irish Eurovision finals eager to win her spot as a representative of Ireland at the iconic Eurovision competition. Join us as we delve into the single, ‘Laika Party’.
Co-penned by an international team, including songwriters Larissa Tormey, Truls Marius Aarra, Henrik Ostlund, Erlend Guttulsrud Kristiansen, and EMMY herself, ‘Laika Party’ is a rush of kaleidoscopic electropop set to ensnare your senses with its intoxicating vibes. In true Eurovision style, the single is not just a song but a sonic experience. Pulsating beats hit like a hammer while shimmering synths soothe the EDM-tinged effect; however, while there is a soothing sheen veiling the track, ‘Laika Party’ is the perfect song for any hard-hitting psychedelic rave.
Melodically, ‘Laika Party’ tosses you from one side of the pop realm to the other with rambunctious glee. The thing is, as much as the frenzied melody brims with high-paced, danceable, raw joviality, its sophisticated production makes the track gritty but elegant. For me, at least, it is not the electronic vibe that knocks your socks off but EMMY’s sugary-sweet vocals. Slithering through ‘Laika Party’, her rich, warm and pumped-up vocals enhance the party aura.
A perfect song for a raucous party, its arrangement is an ideal encapsulation of the theme: a party. A tribute to Laika, the first dog to orbit the Earth, EMMY notes that it “reimagines Laika’s story offering a vision where she continues to live happily, flying through space”.
