Emmrose – The Imposter (2021)

At the age of 17, Emmrose is already a veteran in the music world. She began writing songs during her early teens as “something to do”, but it soon progressed into performing at notable venues around New York City. Now attending the LaGuardia Arts High School, the US-based singer-songwriter is honing her songwriting skills along with her natural talent. Featured on Lefuturewave, When The Horn Blows, MP3 Hugger, Ear To The Ground and several Spotify playlists, Emmrose is gaining recognition across the globe. The latest addition to her well-received discography is ‘The Imposter’.

Emmrose is always true to her heart and sound inspired by personal experiences and the emotions within. In ‘The Imposter’, she takes us on her journey living with Imposter Syndrome – a mental health condition involving an internal belief you are not as competent as others make out. Using a personal narrative in a conversational style, Emmrose fills ‘The Imposter’ with vulnerability, fragility and heartfelt beauty in her hopelessness. Yet, while there is a yearning in her anxious vocals, the richness of her voice adds a lingering optimism to the desolate situation.

“Personally, I’ve felt enormous doubt as a singer and a songwriter. The anxiety that I’m not good enough and that everything I write and sing is horrible are thoughts that often go through my head. This song is in dedication to the part of me that feels like an imposter and that it’s not the way I want to live. I hope this song can help people that also struggle with their self-worth, as well as finding ways to cope with their anxiety through the support of friends and family.” – Emmrose on ‘The Imposter’

Lying between Lana Del Rey, Christina Perry and Florence + The Machine, the acoustic-inspired single is gut-wrenching. The obscure lilt to Emmrose’s voice adds uniqueness to her performance; however, it is her elegant execution of the haunting lyricism that makes her sound overwhelming. Rich, warm and bold vocals allow icy poetic lyricism to effortless spew forth in a tender and welcoming soundscape.

Recorded with her producer Mike Abiuso, ‘The Imposter’ is a soothing single creating a languid pool of sound with its delicate melody. A piano-driven track, but with interspersed drums and percussion, ‘The Imposter’ is certainly a stand-out piece. Yet, while the melody is elegant, it is the combination of warm vocals with an endearing melody that adds sophistication far beyond her years.
