Emmrose – Brave New World (2022)

With a reputation for using eclectic melodies and intoxicating lyrics to explore the more serious issues in life, Emmrose has touched on toxic relationships, Impostor Syndrome and brutal vulnerability. She now takes us down a spiral of controversy in her new single ‘Brave New World’. Entitled and inspired by her love for dystopian novels like Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the US-based singer-songwriter embraces a cinematic soundscape once more.

So, now we have a brief idea of which song this review is about; however, who is Emmrose? We previously referred to her as “a unique artist with natural talent” in our review of ‘Waitlisted’ (read our review here), but we are not the only ones to be taken by her music. Featured in Pop Passion Blog, European Indie Music Blog, Concert Monkey and many more, Emmrose is hailed as a sensational singer and an artist to keep your eye on. As I mentioned, Emmrose is not only an intoxicating musician but inserts a sense of poignancy that has you thinking while you swirl about in her soundscape.

‘Brave New World’ is noted as Emmrose’s first politically-charged single as she compares themes from dystopian novels to the “madness in our world today”. Living in a world filled with disinformation, misinformation, conspiracy theories and sociopolitical unrest, it is easy to say that our reality is truly uncertain and a little scary. The first lyric of the track is based around the term “soma” – the fictional drug used to control people in the novel Brave New World – and explores the concept of “using a mind-numbing drug to forget the problems of the world relevant to how people cope in today’s troubled times.”

Taken with the exposition of human fragility, ‘Brave New World’ has a vulnerable sentimentality that aligns so well with the cinematic melody. Recorded with Mike Abiuso from Behind The Curtains Media, the intriguing arrangement sends shivers down your spine with its hard-hitting effect. The interesting thing about the smooth, slow and soft singles is how the wistfulness punches you in the chest with its simplistic tone. The elegant lyricism adds poignancy to the track that leaves you swirling about in a desperate whirlpool of music. Then again, it might be the haunting combination of piano and guitar that leaves you breathless.

Heartfelt, sincere and sensitive, Emmrose oozes intense intimacy in her silky-smooth track ‘Brave New World’.
