Emmrose – Afterlife (2021)
Having already crossed our virtual desks twice in the past six months, Emmrose is keeping us intrigued with her hypnotic music. While she is under 20 years of age, the US-based singer-songwriter is a well-versed musician with a reputation for innovative sounds. Featured on blogs like Ear To The Ground, When The Horn Blows, Lefuturewave and various Spotify playlists, Emmrose is reaching people on an international level. The latest addition to this award-winning singer’s repertoire is ‘Afterlife’.
With her reputation for eclectic music with dark ambiences, Emmrose has a penchant for sending shivers down your back. Her collaborative single with producer Richard Orofino, ‘Afterlife’ is a “twisted romance song” written during the NYC quarantine. Inspired by fantasy romances focussing on toxic relationships, the supernatural track incorporates elements of synth-pop throughout. In fact, it is the use of synths that adds a post-punk meets alternative pop design making it truly otherworldly.
As I mentioned, the single looks at toxic relationships but delves into the intricacies of the pairing. Exposing the fragility of characters, ‘Afterlife’ captures the interplay between power and dependence within the complex situation. Following the upbeat ‘Waitlisted’, ‘Afterlife’ uses a brooding, intimate and intense approach.
While the style might be different to previous tracks, only showcasing versatility as an artist, ‘Afterlife’ retains the richness of Emmrose’s bold vocals. The thing is, ‘Afterlife’ is far more mystic with a lingering sense of melancholic insight. Once again reaching into my soul, swirling things about and leaving me gasping for breath, Emmrose proves her sound is distinctive, anthemic and incomparable.
