Emmi Maaria – Why would we girls be sad (2023)
Embracing a passion for music at age six when she began taking violin lessons, singer-songwriter, violinist and composer Emmi Maaria has dedicated her life to music. During her studies at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, Emmi Maaria discovered a way to combine classical and contemporary sounds with “…stirring authenticity and timely relevance…” (Obscure Sound). Her compositions have received critical acclaim as “highly creative with a sense of originality” and, despite being only 31 years old, demonstrate sophistication only decades of experience can bring.
Following the final release of her three-piece work, ‘On foot I wandered through the solar system’, Emmi Maaria melds traditional folk sounds with an underlying pop quality in ‘Why would we girls be sad’. Toe-tapping and bouncy, there is a sense of joviality to the single prompting dancing in listeners. In fact, I can easily see people dancing around a fire with flowers in their hair and a heart-warming violin playing in the background when listening to this song. Yet, the most intriguing aspect of ‘Why would we girls be sad’ is not the whimsical, flowing melody but the Finnish lyricism.
Inspired by Finnish poems, Emmi Maaria delicately fuses literature and music in a soul-stirring composition. Originally sung poetry by rune singers in Finnish Karelia, a region in Eastern Finland, the traditional flair possibly exists in the original execution; however, Emmi Maaria brings a contemporary authenticity speaking to audiences of all ages. Personally, I do not speak Finnish but the music calls to me to lose myself in its wonder and curious obscurity.
“Reading through the poems, I was charmed by the whimsical lyrics. They had such playfulness and charm to them but also an overwhelming amount of strength and determination. Why would we girls be sad, let us stick together while hoping for a better year to come. It was valid then and it is valid now…” – Emmi Maaria on ‘Why would we girls be sad’
