Emma and the Fragments – Circle of Concern (2021)
Reminiscent of Paramore, Emma and the Fragments is an alternative rock meets pop-punk group from the UK. Based in East London, the female-fronted foursome have a knack for engaging lyricism atop moving melodies. While I may have only just heard of the group, Emma and the Fragments have made a name for themselves supporting All Saints, playing various festivals and creating jingles for Virgin Radio. In fact, Emma was deemed the best frontperson by Mumford and Sons Ben Lovett. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed discography is the single ‘Circle of Concern’.
Blending elements of contemporary alt-rock with old-school post-punk, Emma and the Fragments drag you into a whirlpool of old meets new. The combination of powerful guitars and relentless drums contribute to the hazy ambience, but it is Emma’s ethereal vocals that take the lead. Delicate, but with a certain authority, Emma elegantly traverses the grungy melody like a shimmering gossamer blanket over a deep, dark pool.
Focusing on the tale of a young woman struggling to be free, ‘Circle of Concern’ is a sonic representation of fear and anxiety. Exploring human fragility with its brutal honesty, Emma and the Fragments expose vulnerability in the new track. Yes, the poignant lyricism touches on negative thoughts; however, it is the heavier melody that creates the setting for uncertainty. Moreover, the otherworldly vocals enhance the feelings of desperation and pain.
Truly haunting and spine-chilling, ‘Circle of Concern’ will leave you trembling with tears in your eyes.
