Emily Barker – Wild To Be Sharing This Moment (2023)
If you have a taste for the BBC crime drama Wallander, then take a listen to its theme song. Composed and performed by singer-songwriter Emily Barker (the artist we’ll be reviewing today), ‘Nostalgia’ may be the single Barker is most well known for; however, the Australian songstress has been turning heads with her music long before and after Wallander. Not only has she been turning heads, but she’s been winning hearts with her critically acclaimed discography, engaging performances and coverage from publications, radio stations, playlists and more. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Wild To Be Sharing This Moment’.
Following her well-received track ‘Politik’, Barker adopts a more cinematic sound in ‘Wild To Be Sharing This Moment’. Retaining her signature folk tone in the melody, the new single could easily lie alongside Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell; however, a heavier leaning toward folk pop lies beneath the surface. Bold drums match a moving guitar with slips of synths blend effortlessly in a heart-warming swirl.
Just as warm and rich as the melody may be, ‘Wild To Be Sharing This Moment’ stings with melancholic vulnerability oozing from Barker’s vocals. Soft and smooth, a gentleness floats across her charming voice but a tremulous fragility exists beneath the surface. Interestingly, while the single gives you a sense of concern and undefined anxiety, it simultaneously contains an empowering hopefulness that we will see light at the end of the tunnel. When speaking about ‘Wild To Be Sharing This Moment’, Barker explains:
“I was people-watching and thinking of how vulnerable we all are, with our own stories and secrets, all sharing this same moment in time and space. I found myself questioning where empathy has gone. The song is about compassion… I’m an advocate for keeping conversation alive across divides and for trying to approach each encounter as an opportunity for connection. We must find our common humanity in order to make the world a safer, better place for us all to live in.”
