ellakate – If You Want Me To (2022)

Raised in a musical family, ellakate (also known as Ella Greenbaum) found a natural talent for creating music and performing. A love for sharing experiences and telling stories made her pursue music further than forcing her siblings to listen to her songs, and now we have the beauty of ellakate reaching our ears. Compared to a “young Amy Winehouse”, her sultry and velvety vocals carry a fresh but familiar tone that is sorely needed in a stagnating industry. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘If You Want Me To’.

Following her debut single ‘High Maintenance’, ellakate’s ‘If You Want Me To’ showcases her diversity moving from an upbeat debut to a slower sophomore song. Her sultry vocal execution shows a strong leaning toward the attitude of Amy Winehouse, but there remains a Billie Eilish feel in the overall arrangement. Silky and sensual, ellakate’s sultry tones turn your head sending you off on a soul-stirring journey. Interestingly enough, while the contemporary pop meets jazz-pop sound is heard in ‘If You Want Me To’, there is a tinge of indie-rock dropping into the textured background.

While the melody is one to hold your attention, ellakate’s depth and innovation as an artist are in both the melody and poetic lyricism. Exploring topics of finding love, growing up and an altogether coming-of-age experience, the UK singer-songwriter writes from the heart in a brutally honest way. In ‘If You Want Me To’ there is a smooth, soothing Sade-esque flow with cheeky winks; however, the true theme is more laidback and stings of wistful innocence. Ellakate explains that ‘If You Want Me To’ is “special to me because it is one of the first times, I was able to write about my personal feelings for a friend…from daydreaming of romance to letting them go so they can be happy.”
