Ella Eliza – Life Without Me (2024)
From her debut single ‘Like I Can’t Breathe’ in 2018, to the critically acclaimed debut EP INTROSPECTION in 2021, and the 2023 single ‘The Art of Letting Go’, Ella Eliza is unafraid to explore the heartbreaking, painful, gritty essence of reality – no matter how desperate it might be. Known for moving melodies and introspective lyrics, the UK-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist holds people in her arms to walk through a swirl of alternative pop. This is my introduction to Ella Eliza, but she is already turning heads internationally performing with artists like Nono, featuring in numerous publications, and receiving airtime on radio stations like BBC Radio 1. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Life Without Me’.
Following her well-received track ‘The Art of Letting Go’, ‘Life Without Me’ adopts her signature synth-driven alternative pop swirls; however, a tinge of indie-pop clings to the song with Ella Eliza’s smooth vocals kicking a hint of soul/jazz in a sassy shrug. Highly personal and intimate, each of Eliza’s songs tackles another edge of self-discovery in a confusing world. When it comes to ‘Life Without Me’, she explains:
“When it comes to my songwriting, I usually write tracks that aim to empower or uplift others. With this new song, I had just gone through a breakup and found myself writing something deeply personal and a lot more self-reflective… I decided that I was ready to open up about my sexuality for the first time and let my audience in on some of the most vulnerable parts of myself…”
An intricate combination of swirling synths and bold beats, ‘Life Without Me’ drags you into an experience of confusion, fear, and vulnerability; however, a sense of empowerment exudes from the music. The beats pulsate like a pounding heart, while the kaleidoscopic haziness veils certainty with bewilderment. The thing is, amidst a foggy perfumed flood, clarity breaks through in confident, warm, soulful vocals finding a happy conclusion.
