Elizabeth Eckert – Like A Piano (2023)

Described by Grammy Award-winning producer Paul Worley as an artist who “…bends music to her will, note by note”, Elizabeth Eckert is an outstanding talent that is not to be pigeon-holed. Embracing her passion for music at a young age, and we’re talking toddler age, Eckert climbed on the piano bench and started her musical journey early on. A classically trained pianist, the US-based artist moved to Nashville to pursue her dreams; unfortunately, a wrist injury derailed her career. The thing is, while her injury was unfortunate, it was serendipitous as Eckert rediscovered her artistry through songwriting. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Like A Piano’.

Following her debut album Trophy, ‘Like A Piano’ is Eckert’s first single release in approximately five years. Recorded with producers Paul Worley and Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Eckert returns to the music scene with a heartbreaking, emotional, moody and intoxicating pop ballad. Elegantly combining classical piano with a contemporary pop vocal execution, Elizabeth Eckert finds the balance between classical and commercial in this song. She notes her influences as Norah Jones, Adele and Billie Holiday, and these influences are evident in ‘Like A Piano’. Yet, while comparisons can be made to more established artists, Elizabeth Eckert has a tone that is entirely unique – completely Elizabeth Eckert and nothing else.

Just as the melody is skin-tingling and soul-soaring, Eckert showcases her natural storytelling abilities with the song’s powerful theme. Penned as a response to being “played by a one-time lover”, Eckert’s haunting sound encapsulates the pain, poignancy and heartache felt by the singer-songwriter. Immediately connecting with her audience, there is an intense intimacy in the desperate piano which is heightened with Eckert’s dulcet vocals. Interestingly enough, while ‘Like A Piano’ is a bitter track, the soothing flow of the melody seems to pull you close in a warm, understanding sonic embrace.

Exploring human fragility in a delicate way, Elizabeth Eckert lays everything on the table with her chilling single ‘Like A Piano’.
