Elise – Cowboy (2020)
Time is often the best healer of all while helping you to reconnect with your roots. The healing journey is laid out in ‘Cowboy’ by Elise as she touches on the feelings of regret and guilt many carry from growing up. Hitting you with a sense of nostalgia, this dreamy folk song makes you think about running around the garden as a child and now not being around those who were with you in the past.
The single is the first release from Elise for this year flowing her debut EP released in 2019. She had a tour planned for the UK and Ireland in May, but when this was cancelled she focused on this single. Fortunately, the song was recorded just before lockdown and mastered by Grammy award winner Joe LaPorta.
‘Cowboy’ has a gentle folk guitar line that leads you into the song. The melody has layers working together to form a dreamy folk soundscape. The guitar line rests at the base with strings wafting over it adding a warm breeze to the sound. On the chorus, there is a crashing burst of sound that propels you into the vocals. While this crashing sound drives you forward, there is something soft about it almost like a wave crashing against the shore.
Elise’s vocals form the middle layer of the track and fill you with a sense of nostalgia. Her performance has a wonderful flow that rises and falls with the melody. This adds an airiness to the track enhancing the nostalgia vibe. The lyrics send you reeling into a time gone by, but there is a sense of healing to the tone. While you work through childhood memories and the emotions they generate, you are also set up for the present and future.
Elise lets you know that time is the best healer with the nostalgia-soaked dreamy folk single ‘Cowboy’. The song uses melodic layers to create a dreamy soundscape brimming with nostalgia and the sepia tones of childhood memories. The vocals add to this vibe while helping you work through everything.
