Elina Filice – Lying (2020)

The concept of lying is not something that is generally used as inspiration for songs. In her new single ‘Lying’, Elina Filice teams up with spoken word artist Claudia Crampton to look at this. After meeting at an open mic night in Dublin, Filice showed Crampton a guitar loop she had and a few days later the first verse was done. Since then, the single has taken a life of its own and is now the clever alternative track we have today.

Filice’s soulful and melodic sound draws on influences of spoken word and blues. This combines perfectly with Crampton’s positive style that highlights the diversity of the world. Together they have created a single that looks at the impact of lying on our lives and the ups and downs of relationships.

‘Lying’ uses this guitar line in the opening to hit you with the blues vibes. The guitar line continues in the background and melds with a soft piano to form this paced, but gentle melody. The shuffling beats that come for the chorus add to the easy flow of the music. There is a sense of sadness to the melody that lingers in the notes. However, there is also a thread of hope within the tones like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel and just need to get there.

The easiness of the melody is at odds with the quick flow of Crampton’s vocals when they hit. There is a clever rhythm to her performance that draws you into the rise and fall. Her performance flows perfectly into the melodic chorus full of harmonies and this wonderful vibe. Filice’s vocals have a more spoken-word feeling than a rap that offers this edge of poetry to the song. The interplay between these styles is wonderful and works so well with the melody that you can’t help but enjoy the song.

Elina Filice teams up with Claudia Crampton to considers the concept of lying and its effects on us in the aptly titled single ‘Lying’. The bluesy melody is at odds with the quick spoken-word verses, but flows with the melodic chorus. Crompton’s clever and quick vocals grab your attention and hook you while Filice’s performance adds a sense of poetry to the song.
