Electric High – Flicking The Bees (2023)

Don’t flick the bees or they will sting you. A common-sense concept whether it is metaphorical or what it says on the tin. Never flick bees, I mean who does that? Are you stupid? Rock band Electric High pushes this message making sure no one gets hurt… or at least, the idea is no one will be hurt.

Take Aerosmith, meld it with a blast of Black Sabbath and you might have an idea of the ferocity of the Norwegian band Electric High. Typically an “upbeat but I’ll hit you between the eyes if you mess with me” fivesome, there is a hidden aggression beneath the hard-hitting melodies – we hear that again in the new single ‘Flicking The Bees’. A lot more Aerosmith than Black Sabbath or Royal Blood, but still filled with the hard rock attitude we have come to love.

Following the well-received ‘Seven Wonders’, there is a more mellifluous flow to ‘Flicking The Bees’ with an infectious toe-tapping quality. Pounding drums match scorching guitars blasting old-school rock sentimentalities to the track; however, just as it has a vintage rock style, Electric High bring a contemporary vibe slithering through the song. Vocalists PV Staff and Olav Iversen insert a gruff, grungy, grittiness to the arrangement in a sophisticated but brutally raw way.

Bold and brash, the instruments crash about our ears kicking you from pillar to post in a kaleidoscopic haze. Yet, despite the chaos of the rock-inspired thrust, ‘Flicking The Bees’ is angsty with a soothing elegance dripping from each sound, tone and word. A heart-pumping force engulfs you in the drums and guitars, but the lead vocals can intoxicate you with the slightest touch. Greatly reminiscent of Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler, a brush of grittiness flutters past in ‘Flicking The Bees’ increasing its vivacity.

So, what do I think of ‘Flicking The Bees’? I won’t be flicking any bees any time soon, but I don’t mind the swarm if it sounds like Electric High.
