EJ Carey – Crime of Passion (2024)
Take a dab of Paramore and a dash of Avril Lavigne, what do you have? EJ Carey is what you have. The product of the Warped Tour era, US-based Carey oozes pop-punk passion wrapped in an “in your face” attitude. While she is compared to the likes of Avril Lavigne and Hayley Williams, Carey’s musical talent reaches far beyond the hard-hitting pop-rock and pop-punk world. Collaborating with artists from Nashville to Toronto, she incorporates a plethora of influences, inspiration and style in her unique music.
Following a three-year hiatus, EJ Carey returns to the stage with ‘Crime of Passion’. Not necessarily taking a step away from her original style, ‘Crime of Passion’ retains the pop-rock attitude of previous work; however, a new rush of pop-punk-fuelled sound hits as the melody courses through your veins. Recorded and produced by Bryan Fennelly, the new single is a bold concoction of Kyle Harris’ crashing drums, Daniel Yoong’s pulsating bass and his scorching guitar. Interestingly, just as each instrument stands independently demanding attention, the arrangement is a harmonic symphony of kaleidoscopic chaos; everything seems to fit while still burning bright with an independent flair.
The melody itself can stand alone as a powerful piece – truth be told, I’d be happy to hear Kyle Harris and Daniel Yoong perform solos, especially onstage; however, Carey’s silvery vocals with her poetic lyricism ups the ante on ‘Crime of Passion’. Reminiscent of Hayley Williams, there is a silkiness to Carey’s rich voice but with a brashness that perfectly aligns with the track’s theme. Exploring the issue of infidelity, there is a hint of vulnerability but instead of wallowing in misery, Carey and her crew belt feelings of revenge, angst and retribution.
In addition to the single, EJ Carey released an official music video for ‘Crime of Passion’. You can view the video below and on her YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses strobe lights, flashing lights, rapid image transition and rapid moving sequences that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
