Eiffel Taylor – Flip the Tables (2022)

With her second single ‘Flip the Tables’, Eiffel Taylor showcases a musical sophistication far beyond her years. Taking on a more hands-on approach to creating this single, she composed, re-wrote and re-recorded this song over a number of months. Originally comprised of over 300 recorded tracks, this song offers a complex arrangement that highlights the honesty of Taylor’s vocal performance.

The young indie pop artist is adding a more contemporary RnB edge to her sound with this track, letting us know that there are untold depths to her musicality. Skilfully arranged, the single highlights a progression in her musical style and talents that started with performing at private events in the Greater Houston area. When she is not working on her original music, she is involved in choreography, creative writing, ballet and beat-making.

Taylor’s vocals grab your attention in the opening of ‘Flip the Tables’. Her performance has a light electronic edge that enhances the soulful flow of her voice. This edge lifts as the single progresses and the honest and rather sweet tone of her vocals really make their way into the track. There is a great layering to her performance that adds great depth to the track. It is a rather dynamic performance as she swings from one delivery style to another, really showcasing the versatility of her vocals. The soulful slide moves into a more paced RnB bop before rising into a really catchy chorus. Beneath her movement, the overlapping backing vocals give a platform for the main vocal line to shine. There is a fair amount going on in the performance, but this doesn’t detract from the story she has woven into the lyrics. The title of the track is apt when you consider the lyrics and the understanding that she has another side that the person she is dating hasn’t seen yet.

Underneath her dynamic vocal performance is an equally rich melody. There is a slightly stripped-back feeling to the music at times, before a progressive tone climbs up from the depths. This is joined by a shuffle of tones that has your head and shoulders bopping to their rhythm. As the chorus hits, there is a great bounce of tones that makes its way from the low levels of the music. These tones push against the back of your brain while lightly urging you into the catchy vocal flow. Each note has been carefully curated to highlight the vocals which are the real star of the show.

Eiffel Taylor has you bopping to her rhythm while her dynamic, honest and sweet vocals shine through the story woven into ‘Flip the Tables’. From the first second, her vocals grab your attention and hold it as she moves between styles into the catchy chorus. Resting beneath this fantastic performance, the melody retreats to let her shine, before progressively coming back for a push into the chorus.
