EEF – Something For You (2024)
Drawing their band name from the chemical mineral ettringite – the compound that gives concrete compactness and “hard as a rock” character – Italian group EEF bind different backgrounds, experiences and influences in a sonic concrete. Founded in 2015 by Umberto Ferretti (guitar) and Mattia Leoni (drums), EEF (an acronym for Early Ettringite Formation) fuses jazz, funk and rock with an eclectic, toe-tapping flair. Proving to be more than pretty faces intoxicating audiences with their music, EFF has achieved significant accolades since its formation. In 2018, they reached the finals of Rome’s Tour Music Fest and performed in the Forum Jazz Live in Flori playing alongside musicians like Dave Weckl. In recent years, the group played Eurovision reaching the finals and securing ninth place among thousands of participants.
Adding fuel to their burning passion for music, the foursome took their natural talent to the studio releasing the critically acclaimed debut album Horror Vacui in 2020. From then onwards, EFF has turned heads internationally expressing profound concepts in laidback melodies. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Something For You’.
Following the well-received single ‘That’s My Girl’ – the third track after a lineup change introducing vocalist Edoardo Gili – EEF shifts from indie-rock with tinges of funk to smoother, soothing, sensual soul in ‘Something For You’. While a contemporary edginess exists in the new single leaning toward John Legend, ‘Something For You’ oozes vintage soul from Gili’s vocals to Ferretti’s guitar, Leoni’s drums and Giovanni Golaschi’s bass. Clicks of George Benson swirl with slices of Stevie Wonder’s tenderness peaking in Gili’s voice. The piercing of Leonardo Rosselli’s saxophone atop Gili’s sensual vocals brings cheeky sassiness to ‘Something For You’.
Comparisons of iconic artists can be made, but this is for mere reference as EEF has a distinctiveness in its own right. Elegantly blending soulful sounds of yesteryear with a ribbon of modern-day jazz, the lads tinge the melody with a sound that is entirely EEF. For me, listening to EEF is more than merely hearing a tune, it is feeling the tune. ‘Something For You’ envelopes you in a kaleidoscopic river of sonic bliss as rich sincerity crisscross with decadent insanity sending shivers down your spine and chills across your skin.
