Edie Yvonne – Queen Bee (2023)

She may be an upcoming pop sensation set to pioneer a new generation of pop singers but, at her core, Edie Yvonne is just a teenager navigating adolescence. She might have performed with the Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts, penned a debut album, created a short film and released well-received singles, but she is still just a teenager.

Resonating with listeners of all ages, regardless of whether you went through social media-driven adolescence or spent it skateboarding, watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer and learning the art of recording songs from the radio, Yvonne’s music expresses the intricate emotions felt deep inside. Moving through feelings of disconnection, isolation, miscommunication, turmoil, fear and enlightenment, she encapsulated these raw emotions in ‘On Your Mind’ and ‘In The Rain’. She returns with her latest single ‘Queen Bee’ – a scorching exploration of “mean girls and their minions”.

A common theme with each of Edie Yvonne’s singles is the underlying pop style but each single brings a different style for her to wrap around the core pop design. ‘In The Rain’ had a folk-tinged tone and ‘On Your Mind’ was bubble-gum pop. In ‘Queen Bee’ she steps aside into a dreamy synth-driven sonic fog. Recorded with producers Cormac Liotta and Nicky Swedin, a nostalgic dive back to 80s synth-pop emerges binding the cinematic ambience and Yvonne’s bold vocals with twinkling electronic lights.

The song might have an ethereal quality, but the profound depth makes it a darker, haunting and grounding melancholic experience. Edie Yvonne’s vocals break through the hushed veil to scratch the surface of high school’s “Queen Bee” and find what lurks beneath. She might seem the most fantastic and beautiful girl in school but, as Yvonne poetically sings, her motives are twisted, cruel and filled with manipulative enjoyment of the turmoil she creates.

The song is catchy, the chorus infectious and will have you twirling about in a mystical haze, but it is far more than a fun song. A tribute to all the mean girls, ‘Queen Bee’ is the theme song of Regina George (Mean Girls), Quinn Fabray (Glee), Heather Chandler (Heathers) and Kathryn Merteuil (Cruel Intentions).
