Edie Yvonne – In The Rain (2023)

At only 14 years of age, singer-songwriter Edie Yvonne is making waves on an international scale. From Roadie Music to New Fire Music, Green Tea Magazine, Skope Magazine, Pop Passion Blog and East Portland Blog, as well as various podcasts and playlists, the US-based songstress is garnering a global following. Fuelled by inspiration from her grandmother, a renowned opera singer from Nicaragua, Yvonne found a passion in the world of music and drama. The two would often sing together and her evolving natural talent soon grew to join the Youth Academy of Dramatic Arts leading to performances in Xanadu, Cats and Chorus Line. We’re here to look at her music, so come with us as we delve into her latest single ‘In The Rain’.

In her well-received single ‘Stain’, Edie Yvonne explored the hardships and challenges of dealing with reactions toward her birthmark. Once again, Yvonne elegantly captures the intense intimacy behind evocative and emotional experiences with ‘In The Rain’. A personal narrative delves into the complex experience of managing “hurt in the face of pain…” Penned after an argument with a loved one, the poetic lyrics and bittersweet melody processes human emotions spiralling down a slope of confusion, anxiety, angst and turmoil.

“I wrote ‘In The Rain’ after an argument with a loved one, processing the words, my responses, the fears projected onto me, the resentments, and trying to sit with those feelings when it’s someone you truly care about. I was trying to understand the emotions and hoping the song could provide some healing down the road.” – Edie Yvonne on ‘In The Rain’

Given the melody is an intricate exposition of human fragility and vulnerability, one might consider it to be very melancholic and desperate. Instead, ‘In The Rain’ has a message of hope, optimism and search for inner calm in a mire of turmoil. Produced with Nick Sweden, Cormac Lotta and Rrose Productions, ‘In The Rain’ shifts to a softer, more soothing and calm melody from the high-paced ‘Stain’. Simplistic with a raw innocence layered in the single, ‘In The Rain’ can be called commercial pop but there is a dash of indie-folk floating in the foundation.

Despite her young years, Edie Yvonne has a sophisticated charm in her music. Reminiscent of Miley Cyrus, a strong pop flavour exists but with mild obscurity prompting a signature sound. This is my introduction to Yvonne, and I am definitely going to keep my eye on this talented emerging artist, as should you!
