Edie Yvonne – Delusion (2024)

As we age, it becomes more difficult to stay “in touch” with youth culture. Back in my day (I never thought I’d use that phrase), we used CDs and cassette players instead of streaming music on an iPhone. Tablets were a thing of the future, MTV still played music, and crimped hair made you cool. Nowadays, youth culture seems baffling with all those new-age thingies. Edie Yvonne is the voice of a new generation but tackling the same challenges everyone feels during adolescence.

2023 was a busy year for US-based singer Edie Yvonne releasing nine tracks over 12 months. From ‘Queen Bee’ and ‘In The Rain’ to ‘Girl Code’ and ‘No Rain’, the 15-year-old songstress brought a vibrant youthfulness into the same trials, tribulations and emotional struggles transcending generations. Just not with crimped hair. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Delusion’.

Following her folk-pop single ‘No Rain’, ‘Delusion’ sees Yvonne return to upbeat pop anthems oozing youthful energy. The third of her teen pop anthems exploring social hierarchies and emotional tribulations, ‘Delusion’ captures the intricacies of being a teenager in 2024.

Recorded and produced with regular collaborators Nicky Swedin and Cormac Liotta, ‘Delusion’ is filled with bold beats and twinkling synths setting a grin on your face. Yet, despite the liveliness of a jovial single, darkness lurks within rushing forth with poetic lyricism. Yvonne’s charming vocals exude the tenderness of youthful sincerity but, as with the melody, a raw vulnerability and profoundness tinge her dulcet tones.

Sitting somewhere between Taylor Swift and Britney Spears, ‘Delusion’ sets you off on a bubble-gum pink sonic river with kaleidoscopic butterflies fluttering along. The thing is, while all seems fine and dandy on the glittering surface, tumultuous waves collide below. Quickly overtaking the happiness above, you find yourself falling prey to an ebb and flow of crashing waves – some with tantalising fragile darkness, others with a glint of brash toxicity. An interesting exposition of the trials, tribulations and confusion teenagers experience in their complex lives.
