Edie Yvonne – 15 (When I Leave) (2024)

Over the past few months, well actually years, I have started using the phrase “back in my day” frequently. Generational changes swirl about in a kaleidoscopic haze but the underlying challenges everyone faces transcend generations – enter Edie Yvonne. The voice of a digital-driven reality, she might not have used VHS, cassettes or even a phone box; however, bullying, teenage nerves, social anxiety and that bewildering confusion of being a mid-teen with hormones flying about are constant. With her critically acclaimed melodies, US-based Yvonne captures the mindset of Mean Girls and how it barely differs from Clueless or She’s All That.

Following her well-received cover of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’, Yvonne releases her new teenage anthem, ’15 (When I Leave)’. Shifting from the soothing indie-pop of ‘Fade Into You’ and ‘Sometimes’, she adopts a hard-hitting blend of pop-rock and pop-punk in the new single. Tapping her hat at the sounds of Green Day, Good Charlotte and Blink 182, a nostalgic flush of 90s rock clings to ’15 (When I Leave)’. Interestingly, the crashing guitars matched by searing guitars offer a strong “spin about with your hands in the air” attitude, yet there remains desperate vulnerability and angst in the track.

While ’15 (When I Leave)’ is performed with a female lead vocal, one could expect the voice of Avril Lavigne or The All-American Rejects’ Tyson Ritter as the theme is universal. Unique in her tone, timbre and pitch-perfect sound, Edie Yvonne explores the angst and conflict faced in overwhelming changes – in this case, her beginning a new high school. Confused, frustrated, fearful, angry, and lost in a void of uncertainty, Yvonne understands the reason for change but also feels the lingering despair and tragic desperation of leaving good memories behind.

While I come across many young artists, the skill of up-and-coming adolescents astonishes me. I discovered Edie Yvonne with her single ‘In The Rain’, however, over the past year she has matured dramatically both musically and as an individual. Reaching far beyond her 15 years, Yvonne offers sophistication, maturity and knowledge many adults have yet to consider. I am eager to see what else this natural talent has for us.
