Edgar Allan Poets – White Noise (2021)

Describing themselves as “noir rock”, Edgar Allan Poets is a merging of elements of classical, grunge and melodic metal. Reminiscent of Radiohead and Nirvana, but with a touch of Beethoven, the US-based duo is breeding a new type of rock; hence, the term “noir rock”. Featured on Havoc Underground, Indie Band Guru, Sound Sphere Magazine and several online radio stations/podcasts, the group is gaining a reputation for provocative music on an international level. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the single ‘White Noise’.

Combining the talents of Chris Mariotti (vocals and guitar) and The Shadow (drums and percussion), Edgar Allan Poets plunge you into an otherworldly swirl of sound with their sensational music. Following the single ‘Not Your Guinea Pig’, ‘White Noise’ adopts a heavier, more palpable sound. While retaining the spine-chilling quality of their previous releases, ‘White Noise’ embraces a melodic metal style with a lingering eerieness.

What I find intriguing about Edgar Allan Poets is the sophistication of their work. Bridging the gap between classical instrumentation and hard-hitting rock, the lads show they are not to be pigeon-holed. Pounding drums meld effortlessly with Mariotti’s gruff vocals interspersed with The Shadow’s elegant piano. Oddly enough, while there is the hint of the classical within ‘White Noise’, the traditional instrumentation slants toward the soft rock sound of Procol Harum.

Compared regularly to Alice in Chains and Nirvana, Edgar Allan Poets have a rugged essence with a sophisticated sensuality. Mariotti’s vocals are bold and robust harmonically intertwining with the charming melody; however, the soothing sound has a jarring quality leaving you gasping for breath. It’s not a bad feeling, just an extremely intense one that will stay in your mind for a while.

In addition to the single, the Poets have released an intriguing lyric video. Unlike many lyric videos that use an amusing animation style, ‘White Noise’ has an ethereal feel in its composition. Influenced by the works of Hitchcock and Poe, the video scrawls the lyrics atop a misty forest filled with whispered secrets. The interaction between the translucent ghosts enhances the poignancy of the song while adding a surreal intimacy between the images and the viewer. Gothic, dark and soul-stirring, Edgar Allan Poets have won my heart with their single ‘White Noise’.
